Car manufacturers are increasing moving to low viscosity oils and ADE oil supplier LIQUI MOLY has recently launched two new oils Top Tec 6100 and Top Tec 6200. But why do car makers want to use less viscous lubricants?

Oliver Kuhn, deputy head of the LIQUI MOLY oil laboratory says that the reasoning is all about reduced fuel consumption. He says, “In order to achieve the goal of reduced fuel consumption and emissions, manufacturers have made many adjustments and oil is one of these. Oil does lubricates but it also restricts. A thick, viscous oil restricts the motor more than a thin oil. Thanks to a low viscosity oil the fuel consumption can be reduced by 2 or 3%.

However, Oliver says low viscosity motor oil should only be used as specified by the car manufacturer. A low viscosity oil in a conventional engine can lead to massive wear and catastrophic motor failure. He says, “If it was important to check you were using the right motor oil before, now it's getting really dangerous. That's why you should always check first in the manual or in our Oil Guide at www.liqui-moly.com whether the oil is approved for your car.”

Oliver also explains that the days of a “one size fits all” oil are long gone. He comments, “Oil is a liquid spare part nowadays, which is precisely aligned to a specific engine type. Just as there are no standard brakes for all cars, there is no oil for all cars.”

With regard to the future Oliver says the trend is towards even lower viscosity oils, with 0W-16 and 0W-12 grade viscosities on the horizon.

New Valve Train Catalogue

FAI has introduced the 2017 edition of its Valve Train Catalogue. This covers 1300 pages including all make applications, including 182 new part numbers.
