Liqui Moly Screenwash Antifreeze

lm-iceFrozen windscreen washers are at best an inconvenience but can also be very dangerous. With a cold winter predicted the simple solution is to use an effective winter screenwash antifreeze.

Windshield Antifreeze (L6903) from Liqui Moly prevents windscreen washing systems from freezing up and is effective up to – 30 °C. It can be used diluted and undiluted and also contains a highly effective cleaning additive. It increases the driver visibility through clear windows for added safety and does not attack paints, rubber or plastics. L6903 is competitively priced and comes in a convenient 500ml bottle.

 
FAI Timing Belts and Chains

faitcFAI continues to introduce new timing chain and belt kits to meet latest demand and is also adjusting it current range in line with market feedback. This allows the range to meet customer needs more effectively while also offering even better value.

Two new kits have been introduced to offer more cost effective alternatives to two existing part numbers:

TBK499 is an option to TBK138

TBK516 is an option to TBK216

The key difference in these two kits is the removal of the high cost hydraulic damper.

A new option is also now available for the popular TCK56 application for Toyota Yaris. This kit is now available without VVT hub or sprockets, as part number  TCK107.

FAI also recommends that engines that are fitted with a timing chain and timing belt should have both replaced at the same time as a matter of course. This offers increased reliability and will workout more economical in the long term. Some popular part numbers that should be fitted together are:

TCK7  & TBK190  Citroen, Ford, Mini and Peugeot applications

TCK99 & TBK246 Citroen, Ford, Peugeot and Volvo applications

Brake Fluid Testing

brake-testElectronic devices to test automotive brake fluid when in service are becoming increasingly popular. Correctly designed and used, they can make a real contribution to road safety, while providing profit opportunities for garages.

However, customers should be aware that these testers are not all of the same design  and some are very much better than others. We are aware of many incidents where electronic brake fluid testers have incorrectly failed new product straight out of a bottle, while under different circumstances passing product as acceptable which had become dangerous for use.

 In our experience any brake fluid tester which does not actually heat the fluid is likely to give misleading or even dangerous results. Such testers will estimate the water content electronically by measuring the conductivity (or occasionally the capacitance) of the fluid, which in theory increases as water is absorbed. The tester then converts this measurement to supposed boiling point and indicates the result commonly as a display of green, yellow or red lights, depending on the conductivity.

Unfortunately, this measurement principle is fatally flawed as the conductivity of new brake fluids varies substantially, from not only between DOT 3, DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 types but also from formulation to formulations within a DOT grade depending on the additives used. This means that unless a conductivity tester is calibrated on one manufacturer’s product and then used for that product only, it is likely to give very inaccurate results.

In contrast to this type of equipment testers are available which actually heat a sample of the fluid to establish the boiling point, thereby getting away from the problem of varying conductivities. In our experience these provide the best balance of performance and economy currently available. Even so caution is needed, careful handling and regular calibration being required if results are to be reliable.
